Diane Arbus: In The Beginning at the Hayward Gallery

Largely dedicated to Arbus' early work between 1956 and 1962, this exhibition shows photographs that are less well known than her later work when the photographer began to gain more recognition and artistic opportunities. Often small in size, these early photographs illustrate how Arbus developed her distinctive 'eye' and subject matter. Roaming through American streets, places of popular entertainment, parks, coffee shops and boarding houses, Arbus finds the extraordinary, telling details of ordinary lives and the way in which people at the margins always have something interesting to say about their lives.
